Basketball Policies
- When there is no Court Monitor present, all play takes place on a first-come, first-served basis.
- All players are required to wear shirts, athletic shorts/pants, and closed-toed athletic shoes at all times. All apparel policies outlined in General Policies and Procedures apply.
- Profanity, arguing, and fighting are prohibited in the Recreation Center. Participation in a fight will result in immediate removal from the facility. Those removed from the facility will be denied access until they attend a meeting with the Assistant Director of Facility Operations.
- All bags must be stored in a locker at all times. URW staff is not responsible for any property left unattended.
- All games are played to 12 points straight, and baskets are worth 1 and 2 points.
- Food is permitted in the first-floor common areas but not in activity spaces or anywhere on second and third levels.
- Gambling of any kind is prohibited within the Recreation Center.
- Guests are prohibited from checking-out basketballs. Please reference the Informal Recreation Equipment Issue policies.
Basketball Policies – Court Monitor Present
- All players must treat Court Monitors and all URW Staff with patience and respect. Failure to follow this policy will result in removal from the facility, and those removed will be subject to the Disciplinary Policy.
- All players must be present, dressed in proper attire, and ready to play in order to have their name added to the board by the Court Monitor. Only one name can be signed up per person.
- Clock will operate when there are 16+ players on the court. Once the clock starts it will continue to run, unless there is an injury. The clock will not restart once the time has started.
- All games are played to 12 points straight (with a 10-minute continuous clock), and all baskets are worth 1 and 2 points.
- In the event that no team scores 12 points in the allotted 10 minutes, the leading team is declared the winner and may stay on the court.
- In the event of a tie, 2 minutes are put on the clock, first basket wins.
- If no team scores in the 2-minute overtime period, a shootout may take place.
- Court Monitors are not responsible for calling fouls. All fouls called in a game must be acknowledged and respected. If a dispute cannot be settled over a call, the player that made the call must shoot for the ball.
- Any player participating in a game has to wait for that game to finish prior to putting their name back on the board, including when a player quits a game. The participant must wait for that game to be finished in order to sign their name back up with the Court Monitor.
- Please refer to our full list of General Policies and Procedures. Failure to follow these policies may result in removal from the facility, and those removed will be subject to the Disciplinary Policy.
Disciplinary Policy
- Misconduct or violation of facility policies may result in ejection, suspension, cancellation of membership, or referral to the Cleveland State University Campus Police and/or City Police.
- Anyone removed from the facility will be denied access until they attend a meeting with the Assistant Director of Facility Operations.
- Members are responsible for their children’s or sponsored guests’ conduct and any damage to or loss of property that may result from their actions. Disciplinary action may result in the loss of guest or membership privileges.
- Memberships and/or guest passes will not be extended or refunded for disciplinary actions taken by URW Staff.
Equipment Issue for Information Recreation
- Members may check out informal recreation equipment on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A valid membership is required to check out equipment.
- Daily guests and patrons with a 5 Punch Guest Pass are prohibited to check out equipment, except towels.
- Towel Service is included for all members renting a locker from the Recreation Center.
- Towels are available for rent for $2 per day for those without Locker Service.
- CSU Students are only permitted to purchase a semester towel rental provided they are enrolled in the current semester.
- Equipment checked out from the front desk may not be taken out of the facility.
- If equipment is damaged, and/or not returned, a replacement fee will be assessed. The fee must be paid to regain access to the Recreation Center. Any replacement costs associated with informal recreation equipment checkouts are non-refundable.
- Members will be held accountable for the items they check out. Members should not loan items to other patrons of the facility.
Facility Rentals
- All facility rental requests must be submitted 14 business days prior to the scheduled event and requests cannot be made more than 6 months in advance. Please reference the Rental page to view our full policies and procedures.
Functional Fitness Area
- The Functional Fitness Area is available for open recreation when F45 classes are not in progress. Open recreation users are permitted to use all non-F45 branded equipment.
- Functional fitness equipment should remain in the designated area.
- Atlas stones are not to be slammed.
- Overhead movements are only permitted in the outside lane of the turf.
- Agility work is permitted on the turfed lanes, but sprinting is reserved for the third-floor track.
Indoor Track
- The inside lane (11.5 laps/mile) can be used for walking. The outside lane (10.5 laps/mile) can be used for running.
- For the safety and courtesy of the track users, there is to be no standing on the track at any time.
- The track direction changes daily.
- Walking or performing lunges with dumbbells is permitted in the inside walking lane only. All other strength equipment is prohibited on the track.
Lockers & Locker Room
- In accordance with Cleveland Municipal Code Ordinance No. 1446-13, URW allows transgender citizens to use whichever restroom and locker room that aligns with their gender identity.
- URW Staff has the right to enter any locker room or restroom in emergency situations.
- The use of electronic devices for photograph and video are strictly prohibited.
- Day Use Lockers are for single-day use only – they will be emptied each evening. If a personal lock was in use, it will be cut and items will be stored in lost and found for 14 days. An exact description of the item(s) and your photo ID are required to reclaim items.
- URW has the right to enter any locker at any time. For this reason, no personal locks are permitted to be used over top of our built-in combination locks.
- Recreation Center locker rooms close when the building closes, members should plan their workouts accordingly.
- Do not leave soaking wet items in lockers. Suit spinners are available.
- Do not leave food in lockers.
- All lockers must be renewed by the locker expiration date or they will be cleaned out and re-issued. All lockers must be renewed in person. Items cleared from expired lockers will be kept for 14 days and then donated to charity.
- The PE Locker Rooms will close one hour prior to the Recreation Center closing. Access to these lockers during special events will be prohibited.

Pool Policies
- Busbey Natatorium may only be used when a Lifeguard is on duty.
- Pool/lane availability is subject to change based on the number of lifeguards on each shift.
- Priority is given to CSU Athletics Department practices and events occurring in Busbey Natatorium.
- During Rec Swim open hours, a minimum of 1 lane will be set aside. Rec Swim includes lap swimming, general recreational swimming, and individual water exercising. Lane sharing is required when there is limited pool space.
- All users must wear appropriate swimwear for pool use while in Busbey Natatorium. Appropriate swimwear includes 1-piece bathing suits, 2-piece bathing suits, swim briefs, jammers, swim trunks, swim diapers, and religious swimwear only. No street clothing may be worn in the water.
- Swimming is prohibited when infectious or communicable disease is present.
- Infants and toddlers must wear swim diapers or swim pants that are form-fitting.
- Children under 13 years of age or under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times unless participating in a scheduled program.
- A Viking Card or Rec Card must be presented and left with the Lifeguard attending the Aquatic Welcome Desk upon entering the Busbey Natatorium.
- Guests must sign in at the Aquatic Welcome Desk.
- There is no recreational use of the starting blocks.
- Flips, back dives, or backward jumps are prohibited during open swim.
- Diving is permitted in the Competition Pool deep end from the deck only.
- Running, pushing or horseplay is prohibited on the pool deck and in the competition pool. Lanes are reserved for swimming laps, swim lessons or programmed aquatic group fitness classes.
- Food or drinks are prohibited in the pool area, without prior notification. Water in closed containers is permitted.
- US Coast Guard-approved personal floatation devices are permitted with the permission of the Aquatic Supervisor on duty, and any children using them must stay within arms-reach of an adult in the water at all times.
Pro Shop Sales
- Sales completed in the Pro Shop must be sold under the member’s account to assist with processing refunds.
- Apparel and all non-perishable items only may be returned within 14 days of purchase. The apparel must have the original sales tag still properly attached and the receipt. Merchandise cannot have been opened or used. Returns are subject to verification by URW.
Racquetball/Squash Courts
- Reservations can be made in person at the Customer Service Desk, or by phone during facility hours by calling 216-802-3204, or online at www.csurec.com. Reservations are accepted no more than 24 hours in advance.
- Unreserved courts may be used on a first-come, first-served basis until the top of the hour.
- One court may be reserved per person per day.
- Reservations are limited to one hour per person. Reservations can only be made on the hour.
- There is a 10-minute grace period for reserved courts. After this 10-minute grace period, the reservation is lost and the court is open to other patrons.
- Metal racquets must have racquet guards.
- Hitting racquets against walls, glass, or the floor is strictly prohibited.
- Racquetball/Squash/Wallyball are considered the intended uses of these courts, and these activities take precedent over all other open recreation activities.
- Weights of any kind are prohibited in the Racquetball/Squash Courts.
Weight & Fitness Areas
- All weights must be re-racked after use.
- Dropping weights is prohibited, as it damages the equipment and floors
- Use of weight collars is required at all times.
- Powdered chalk is prohibited in the facility.
- Do not prop weights up against the walls, mirrors, frames, or pillars.
- All cardio and strength equipment must be properly disinfected after use. Spray the towel, not the equipment.
- The use of banisters for stretching bands is strictly prohibited.
- Hands and feet must be covered with hand wraps and footgear when using the boxing circuit.
- Do not operate or attempt to repair machines with loose or damaged parts. Notify URW staff if equipment presents a danger.
- The following free weight lifts are only permitted in the power racks: clean-and-jerk and power clean lifts. Snatch is not allowed in the weight rooms or fitness areas.
- Dumbbells and weights are prohibited on cardiovascular equipment.
